The Osher Inn at Cedars Assisted Living FacilityPortland, MaineDedicated September, 2008
The new Osher Inn Assisted Living Facility completes the development of this CCRC campus. The massing and shape of the facility relates on one side as a continuation of the Atrium ILU and on the other to the Nursing Center; harmonizing with the adjacent buildings yet architecturally distinctive. The glowing wood grid ceiling in the Main Lobby echo design elements of the adjacent facilities’ skylighted lobbies. Activity areas and social spaces are interspersed and centrally located throughout both floors. Apartments are clustered in three distinct "residential neighborhoods" with dining room, lounge, study and fitness center on the first floor and country kitchen, spa and recreation room on the second. The spaciousness of the apartments are enhanced with proportionally large windows, projecting bays, and open Kitchenettes. The facility has been designed to accommodate a future third floor addition. Integral to the design of this Jewish sponsored facility is the roof top cooling tower screen serving as the focal point of the entire campus.(see Master Site Plan, Item 5). The form of the cooling tower screen borrows from Louis Kahn's powerful un-built design for the ancient Hurva synagogue in Jerusalem. The calm symmetry of the trapezoidal form and void of the oval symbolize the Sanctuary. The old Hurva Synagogue, dating back to 1701, was considered the most important synagogue in the land of Israel and central to Jewish spiritual life.
